The post of Deputy Chief of Air Staff was setup in Jan 1963 as Vice Chief of Air Staff to ease the load on Deputy Chief. The directorates of Planning, Training and Education and similar roles were transferred to the VCAS. In April 1977, the nomenclature for VCAS and DCAS were interchanged. In 1987, Dte of Trg and in 1989, Dte of Edn was transferred from DCAS to AOP.
